The Tremendous Economic Value of Conserving the Boreal Forest

New parks and protected areas will
create tremendous economic benefits. How much? Here’s what the number say: Every $1 that Canadian governments invest
in parks boosts national GDP by $6. Protected and conserved areas also strengthen
local economies by creating jobs. With most of those 64,000 jobs in rural areas. A great example are Indigenous Guardians Programs which offer jobs to manage and protect land in parks and Indigenous Protected Areas. Research on the NiHat’ni Dene and the Dehcho
K’ehodi guardian programs showed that for every $1 invested, they generated $2.50 in value. And we know that with
more investment in programs like these we can see even bigger returns. In Australia, almost half of all parks and
conserved lands are Indigenous Protected Areas. In five of those areas, for every $1 the government
invested they saw $3 in benefits. More protected areas mean more economic benefit
for all of Canada. More at borealconservation.org
