Spreading conservation

September 16, 2019

Marine social ecological systems is a way
for us to understand how coastal communities interact with the environment that supports
them. For social ecological systems, we are interested
in the different ways that people manage or conserve their resource. And using the diffusion of innovation theory
we can attempt to understand how certain ideas catch on – how do they infect, how do they
spread. To understand this spread, which is similar to the way diseases spread, we use agent-based modeling. These agents can exchange information with each
other thereby modeling the spread of an idea. And why do we want to understand this? Well, in the real world, we have limited time
and resources to implement a number of management and conservation techniques. Therefore if we can understand the way that
these different ideas spread, across space and time we can hopefully achieve the biggest
bang for our conservation dollars.
