Local group launches new teacher retention program

December 25, 2019

OUR MARGARET JOHNSON IS LIVE THERE NOW. MARGARET: GOOD EVENING TO YOU. THIS IS CALLED THE BEGINNING TEACHER ORGANIZING PROGRAM, OR BTOP. VOLUNTEERS WITH THE FORSYTH COUNTY ASSOCIATION OF EDUCATORS ARE WORKING OUT THE DETAILS INSIDE RIGHT NOW. THEY DON’T HAVE ANY HARD NUMBERS, BUT THEY SUSPECT THAT FORSYTH COUNTY AND DISTRICTS ACROSS THE STATE ARE PROBABLY LOSING HUNDREDS OF NEW TEACHERS EVERY YEAR, SOME GETTING OUT ALL TOGETHER OR MOVING TO OTHER STATES AND DISTRICTS WHERE THEY THINK THE GRASS MAY BE GREENER. THIS PROGRAM TARGETS N TEACHERS WHO SAY THEY ARE OVERWHELMED BY PAPERWORK AND DON’T FEEL APPRECIATED. BTOP WILL PROVIDE TRAINING AND WORKSHOPS FOR AS MANY AS 300 N TEACHERS — NEW TEACHERS AND FORSYTH COUNTY. VETERAN TEACHERS HAVE VOLUNTEERED TO MENTOR THE YOUNG ONES, ALL WITH THE HOPE OF CONVINCING THEM TO STAY RIGHT WHERE THEY ARE.>>BECAUSE WHEN PEOPLE FEEL LIKE THEY BELONG AND ARE BEING NURTURED AND PEOPLE CARE F THEM AND THAT PEOPLE ARE GOING TO BE THERE TO HELP THEM OVER THOSE HARD TIMES, PEOPLE ARE GOING TO STAY. BECAUSE THEY’RE GOING TO SAY, YOU CARE FOR ME. THIS HAS TO BE A LOVE JOB. THIS HAS TO BE SOMETHING YOU A PASSIONATE ABOUT AND THAT YOU WANT TO DO, BECAUSE IF IT’S JU SOMETHING YOU ARE TRYING TO EARN A PAYCHECK FOR, YOU’RE NOT GOI GOING TO STAY. YOU ARE NOT GOING TO STAY BECAUSE IT’S NOT GOING TO ADD UP. MARGARET: SHE ALSO TOLD ME THAT JUST IN FORSYTH COUNTY RIGHT NOW, THEY HAVE MORE THAN 50 TEACHING POSITIONS OPEN TH THEY JUST CANNOT PHIL. THEY BELIEVE THAT THIS PROGRAM MAY KEEP THAT GAP FROM GROWING ANY WIDER.
