Holden Forests & Gardens – Working to Conserve Endangered Species

December 31, 2019

Hello my name is Annie Rzepka and we are at Holden Forest & Gardens at the Holden Arboretum in the Myrtle S. Holden Wildflower Garde, and I’m sitting here next to the lakeside daisy. The lakeside daisy is a federally endangered species, sponsored by the Center for Plant Conservation. The Center for Plant Conservation is an organization that Holden partners with in order to preserve endangered plants that occur throughout the nation. We have about a dozen of those species in the garden. If you’re interested in coming out to look at those species we encourage you to check the labels of the plants. The federally endangered species have red triangles on them and our state endangered species have blue circles on the labels. iIf you’d like to learn more I encourage you to go online where you can learn all about the lakeside daisy by going to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources website. They occur at only one place in the nation and that is at the Lakeside Daisy Preserve at Marblehead in Ottawa County. One of the other things that you can do is you can support institutions like Holden Forests & Gardens, the Nature Conservancy, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources and any other institution that helps protect the habitats that keep these endangered species alive.
