is this the end for Iceland’s magnificent untamed wilderness currently there are energy companies and corporate interests pushing for the right to build power plants high voltage pylons and potentially most destructive of all a number of new dams past damning projects in Iceland have submerged vegetation destroyed waterfalls eroded river beds and banks and disrupted natural habitats standing against the developers is a coalition drawn from across society including environmental groups outdoors associations and the tourist industry come together under the banner of the Hálendið Project their ambition that all 40,000 square kilometres of Iceland Central Highland is designated a national park the threat to the world’s remaining wild spaces is grave and constant they need our protection otherwise they’ll be lost forever to all of us and the generations yet to come
